The department of Chemical and Forensic Sciences at BIUST offers degrees in Chemistry and Forensic Science.
Chemistry is often referred to as the “Central Science” as many subjects depend on its principles. The Chemistry degrees aim at training students the foundation of Chemistry in areas such as Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Analytical, Environmental, Materials and Nanochemistry. We aim at producing graduates who are job-ready by attaching our students to various institutions in which Chemistry is applied. The Department also provides a wide range of MSc and PhD research areas. Both the undergraduate and postgraduate students benefit from a comprehensive range of teaching and research facilities and resources.
The BSc in Forensic Science degree programme is the only one of its kind in Botswana and one of few offered on the African continent. The degree offers a multidisciplinary curriculum encompassing the physical sciences, life sciences, biomedical sciences, mathematical and social sciences. Both the unique needs of Botswana, such as livestock and wildlife crime, as well as universal aspects of forensic science, such as forensic genetics and impression evidence are embedded within the programme. Students will appreciate the entire ‘crime scene to court’ process which will enable them to associate or dissociate links between suspects, victims, objects and the crime scene and present evidence in moot courts as expert witnesses. Our postgraduate programme in Forensic Science offers MSc and PhD by research in various areas of Forensic Science.
