Leadership Dinner: A Celebration of Student Leadership and Transition at BIUST

On the evening of April 10, 2025, The Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST) hosted a significant leadership dinner, bringing together members of the BIUST Executive Management Team, past Student Representative Council (SRC) cabinets, and the newly elected SRC leadership. The event not only marked a farewell to the previous SRC cabinets and postgraduate cabinet members but also served as an official welcome to the newly elected SRC cabinet and underscored the importance of student leadership within the university and the broader educational landscape.

In his address, the University Registrar and Secretary Mr. Kevin Masupe took the opportunity to express his gratitude and appreciation for the former SRC cabinets, recognizing the immense responsibility and dedication required of them. “The role of the SRC is no small task, and the sacrifice that the outgoing members have made to represent the student body has been immense,” he noted. He commended the past leadership for their tireless efforts and contributions, particularly in navigating challenges and advocating for the welfare of their peers.

Mr. Masupe also addressed the incoming SRC leadership, urging them to fully commit to the promises and plans outlined in their manifesto. “Student leadership is similar to organisational leadership,” he stated. “As leaders, you must be strategic and practice critical thinking when managing people. Your role requires not only vision but the ability to act with foresight and purpose, ensuring that your decisions reflect the interests of the entire student body.”

For his part the Vice Chancellor of BIUST Prof. Otlogetswe Totolo, emphasized the critical role of students in shaping the future of the university and the nation. “Students are agents of change, and structures like the SRC serve as a testament that the youth are leaders of today,” he said. The Vice Chancellor reflected on the pride the university takes in its student body, highlighting that BIUST is home to selfless, dedicated, and brilliant students who are committed to advancing knowledge through research. Thanks to their efforts, the university has made impressive strides and, in its early stages, has earned the top ranking in Botswana by Times Higher Education.

Prof. Totolo also pointed out the university’s strategic plan, which emphasizes the values of equality, diversity, and the fair treatment of all genders. “The motto of BIUST is to drive change,” he affirmed. “Through inclusivity and a commitment to gender equality, the university strives to ensure that every voice is heard and that all students are given equal opportunities to thrive.”

The incoming SRC cabinet was especially notable for its gender representation. Out of the 14 ministers in the cabinet, 10 are females, with a female president at the helm. This marks a significant milestone for BIUST, as the university continues to prioritize gender equality in leadership roles. The representation of women in top leadership positions at BIUST serves as a powerful message of empowerment and progress, showcasing the university’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity.

In closing, the event was a celebration of both continuity and change within BIUST, reinforcing the university’s mission to foster a new generation of leaders who are prepared to shape the future through innovation, collaboration, and resilience.
