Exploring The Potential of Space Science In Africa

BIUST through the Department of Geology & Geological Engineering was thrilled to host an academic seminar on Cosmochemistry led by Dr Merian Selorm Sapah who is a Senior Lecturer & Research Scientist at the department of Earth Science at the University of Ghana. The Seminar brought together both students and Faculty members in an engaging exploration for Cosmochemistry.

The insightful presentation highlighted how elemental processes in the Universe are related to Evolution, of which then the drawing of connections is derived from how the chemical composition of extraterrestrial materials such as meteorites help scientists understand the formation of the solar system. The Kgagodi Crater located in the central region of Botswana in the village of Kgagodi which is as a result of a meteorite impact, being one of a few significant examples cited. Generally, the seminar was well received with a strong attendance with active participation during the Q&As session where attendees expressed their appreciation for the speaker for addressing complex scientific concepts on Cosmochemistry thoroughly and adequately.

In closing Dr Merian Selorm Sappah strongly highlighted the importance of strengthening Africa’s capacity in Space & in Planetary Sciences as the Continents unique geological and graphical assets present significant opportunities for building research infrastructure and fostering academic networks in the field, which also solemnly reflects on BIUST and its commitment into fostering global collaboration and knowledge exchange .
