BIUST and BITC Cement Strategic Alliance to Drive Botswana’s Innovation Future

In a demonstration of synergy between academia and industry, the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) officially sealed a transformative partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 13 May 2026.

More than a ceremonial handshake, the agreement symbolizes the coming together of two strategic entities determined to engineer Botswana’s future through innovation, research commercialisation, entrepreneurship, and industrial transformation. The partnership reflects a marriage of scientific excellence and economic ambition, one designed to convert ideas into impact and research into real-world solutions.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, BIUST Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Elisha Shemang, described the collaboration as both timely and strategic, noting that although the duo has worked together over the years, the MOU now cements a more structured and intentional relationship.

Professor Shemang highlighted BIUST’s position as a research-intensive university committed to producing highly skilled graduates, cutting-edge technologies, and impactful research aligned with Botswana’s development priorities

“At BIUST, we recognize that the true value of academic knowledge is realized when innovation moves beyond laboratories into industries, communities, and national development spaces,” he said.

The Acting Vice Chancellor emphasized that BIUST’s specialised Research Groups are deliberately aligned with Botswana’s key economic sectors to strengthen collaboration with industry players and international partners. He added that the partnership with BITC creates a stronger bridge between innovation, investment, and industrial growth.

One of the major projects already emerging from this symbiotic relationship is the development of an Artificial Intelligence-powered Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Solution. A dedicated BIUST team has already begun working closely with BITC following the completion of a Strategic and Business Analysis exercise to guide implementation.

Professor Shemang further expressed optimism that the collaboration would stimulate entrepreneurship among students and researchers while creating stronger connections between academia, investors, and industry leaders.

For his part, BITC Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Keletsositse Olebile, described the partnership as a milestone in Botswana’s journey toward becoming a knowledge-driven and innovation-led economy.

Mr. Olebile noted that BITC and BIUST naturally intersect at a strategic point where research, talent, investment, and enterprise development converge to create economic value.

“Our roles meet where knowledge transforms into commercial opportunity, where innovation attracts investors, and where talent feeds industry growth,” he said.

He stressed that the agreement goes beyond symbolism and represents a practical framework aimed at delivering measurable outcomes for Botswana’s economy through joint implementation initiatives.

The BITC CEO also reflected on previous collaborations between the two institutions, including BIUST’s participation at the Expo Dubai 2020 Innovation Month, where BIUST innovators showcased market-ready products and research projects before international investors and venture capitalists.

Additionally, Mr. Olebile highlighted BIUST’s involvement in the 9th Hour Project in Zutshwa, where the University conducted feasibility studies and proof-of-concept research aimed at commercialising indigenous products to uplift local communities.

The signing ceremony ultimately marked the strengthening of a strategic alliance rooted in shared purpose, mutual ambition, and national development. Through this partnership, BIUST and BITC are positioning themselves as a dynamic duo capable of driving Botswana’s transition toward a more diversified, competitive, and innovation-powered economy.

As Botswana continues to pursue industrialization and sustainable economic growth, the partnership between BIUST and BITC stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when research, enterprise, and vision unite with purpose.
