BIUST Joins Pink October with Cancer Awareness Activities

BIUST has joined the campaign to increase public knowledge and understanding of breast cancer with a variety of events to mark Cancer Awareness Month 2024.

Staff and students have come together in both educational and recreational activities to learn more about breast cancer symptoms, prevention and cure, and to show their support for those affected by the disease.

The activities commenced on Wednesday, 23rd October 2024, with a “BIUST Pink Talk”, an On-line general talk regarding cancer, emphasizing on breast cancer led by Ms. Gare from Cancer Association Botswana.

This morning, the BIUST community led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo, embarked on a Pink Walk where staff and students took on a pink-coloured theme in tribute of the traditional colour associated with breast cancer movement. The Pink Walk aimed to encourage staff and students to show solidarity in supporting Cancer awareness Campaign.

The Vice Chancellor Prof Otlogetswe Totolo gave a moving speech stressing the significance of unity, in tackling breast cancer as it affects everyone indiscriminately.

He mentioned that this year’s theme of “No One Should Face Cancer” serves as a reminder of our duty as members of the BIUST community to stand by those, in need in our midst. He advocated for everyone to extend a helping hand to those affected by cancer to alleviate their struggles.

Prof Totolo also stressed the importance of prevention. He stressed the need of making lifestyle adjustments such, as exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet and mindful habits to lower the risk of cancer and improve our general wellbeing.

He reminded the congregation they should not hesitate to reach out and always seek help from the designated personnel within the University support structures such as through the Human Capital Directorate, student support office and the clinic.
