BIUST Hosts Mobile Science Lab to Inspire Future STEM Leaders

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), in partnership with Merck South Africa, successfully hosted the Curiosity Cube™ outreach programme from 5 to 9 May 2026 at the BIUST campus in Palapye.

The initiative forms part of BIUST’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and educational development within Palapye and surrounding communities. Primary schools from nearby areas were invited to participate in the programme, with each school expected to send 36 learners to take part in the hands-on science experience.

The Curiosity Cube™ is a mobile, solar-powered science laboratory developed by Merck to expand access to science education through interactive experiments and practical learning activities. Designed for learners between the ages of 8 and 13, the programme aims to inspire curiosity and encourage greater interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) careers.

As part of a global initiative operating across North America, Europe, and Africa, the Curiosity Cube™ takes science beyond the traditional classroom environment. During the week-long event, learners participated in guided scientific experiments facilitated by Merck employees, BIUST student volunteers, and programme partners. The activities provided young learners with a rare opportunity to interact with practicing scientists and gain exposure to real-world STEM careers.

Speaking about the initiative, Ms Jennifa Mohale, Curiosity Cube Coordinator for Africa, said the programme seeks to promote STEAM skills, particularly among disadvantaged children who may not have regular access to science laboratories and practical learning resources.

She explained that the initiative also serves as a platform for training BIUST student volunteers, equipping them with the skills to mentor and guide pre-tertiary learners during the practical sessions.

According to Ms Mohale, the programme benefits children by exposing them to STEM-related careers at an early age and stimulating their interest in science and innovation. Through engaging experiments and interactive learning, the Curiosity Cube™ helps young learners develop confidence, curiosity, and enthusiasm for scientific discovery.

Merck, a global science and technology company, operates across three key sectors: Life Science, Healthcare, and Electronics. The company focuses on advancing science and technology to improve lives, while promoting sustainable entrepreneurship and long-term growth.
