In continued efforts to promote health and wellness within the community, staff and students of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) participated in a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. The event was led by the University Secretary and Registrar, Mr. Kenanao Kevin Masupe, and aimed to raise awareness, show support for those affected by breast cancer, and encourage regular self-examination for early detection.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, which advocates for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages. By fostering health awareness, BIUST continues to champion preventive health measures and empower individuals through education.
In his welcome remarks, Professor Elisha Shemang, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, emphasized that the walk was not only an awareness initiative but also a call to action. He noted that the theme, “Let’s Stand Together for Early Detection, Hope and Support,” underscores the shared responsibility to support survivors, promote education, and inspire life-saving change through early detection and community engagement.
This message also supports SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, as BIUST promotes community learning and collaboration with partners to advance health literacy and sustainable well-being.
The keynote speaker, Dr. A. Boima from The Medics Centre, Palapye, delivered an informative session on breast cancer, highlighting topics such as identifying abnormal lumps, symptoms, causes, risk factors, treatment options, and general breast health tips. Dr. Boima also reminded participants that although less common, men can also be affected by breast cancer, making awareness and education vital for everyone.
The event concluded with words of encouragement and a renewed commitment to fostering a culture of health awareness and mutual support within the BIUST community.
Through this walk, BIUST reaffirmed its solidarity with breast cancer survivors and its commitment to advancing public health education and community well-being, key aspects of its contribution to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
