Cultivating Future Scientists: BIUST Welcomes Maape Primary School for STEM Exposure Tour

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) welcomed learners and teachers from Maape Primary School, for an educational tour designed to inspire and nurture interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among young learners.

The visit provided pupils with a unique opportunity to engage directly with academic staff and gain insight into the diverse fields of science and engineering. Through interactive demonstrations and exposure to laboratory equipment, the learners experienced firsthand the exciting world of scientific discovery and technological innovation. The activities sparked enthusiasm and curiosity, encouraging the students to explore future opportunities in STEM-related disciplines.

Speaking during the tour, Dr. Rhodri Evans from BIUST’s Department of Physics and Astronomy highlighted the importance of fostering interest in STEM subjects from an early age. He emphasized that exposing learners to science and engineering environments helps broaden their aspirations beyond traditional career paths and plays a critical role in developing Botswana’s next generation of innovators, scientists and problem-solvers.

A major highlight of the visit was the tour of the BOTSAT-1 Ground Station, home to Botswana’s first national satellite. Located on the BIUST campus, the facility offered students an opportunity to learn about the satellite’s role in advancing research, supporting environmental monitoring initiatives and contributing to national development efforts. The experience provided valuable insight into Botswana’s growing capabilities in space science and technology.

The educational tour forms part of BIUST’s ongoing commitment to promoting STEM education and inspiring young people to pursue careers in scientific and technological fields. Through such outreach initiatives, the University continues to strengthen its role in shaping a knowledge-based economy and supporting Botswana’s long-term development goals.
