UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY HOLDS A SEMINAR IN BIUST

Recently the Department of Chemical and Forensic Sciences, BIUST, hosted Prof Vanessa Hayes, genomicist and Petre Chair of Prostate Cancer Research at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre and Faculty of Medicine and Health in Australia for a seminar titled “Botswana-where it all started: the journey of our modern human ancestors”. Prof Hayes and her team met the Vice Chancellor Prof Otlogetswe Totolo prior to the seminar. She briefed the Vice Chancellor on her research on the human genome research which led to the hypothesis that our modern human ancestors came from Botswana. She also briefed the VC on the new research she is launching in Botswana on prostate cancer, which is investigating the genomics of prostate cancer in Botswana men. Prof. Totolo welcomed Prof Hayes and assured Prof Hayes and her team the University’s support. Prof Hayes was accompanied by Prof. Riana Bornman, from the University of Pretoria’s School of Health Systems and Public Health and Mr Paul Peter, Director of Lab scroll laboratory in Botswana.
