Climate Action

About SDG 13

Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) calls for urgent and coordinated efforts to combat climate change and its far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, economies, and communities. For Botswana, a semi-arid country facing increasing climate variability, rising temperatures, and water scarcity, climate action is not only a global obligation but also a national survival strategy.

Alignment with the BIUST Transformative Strategy (2023–2028)

The BIUST Transformative Strategy 2023–2028 positions the university as a national catalyst for scientific innovation, sustainability, and technological advancement. Within the context of SDG 13, BIUST drives climate action through research excellence, community partnerships, and innovation ecosystems designed to address local and global climate challenges.

Strategic Focus Areas and Impact:

  • Research and Innovation for Climate Resilience:
BIUST conducts applied research in climate modeling, renewable energy systems, hydrology, and environmental monitoring, generating data and solutions that inform Botswana’s climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
  • Renewable and Low-Carbon Energy Solutions:
Through the Energy Research Centre and engineering programs, BIUST promotes the development and deployment of solar, wind, and bioenergy technologies, contributing to national efforts to diversify the energy mix and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Capacity Building and Climate Education:
BIUST integrates environmental and sustainability education across academic programs and community outreach, cultivating a generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators equipped to address climate-related challenges.
  • Community Engagement and Disaster Preparedness:
The university collaborates with local government, NGOs, and communities to implement the BIUST Climate Action Plan, which focuses on early warning systems, cooperative disaster planning, and community resilience initiatives.
  • Policy and Regional Collaboration:
BIUST contributes scientific insights and data to inform national climate policies and supports regional networks through the O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative, fostering cross-border knowledge sharing in climate adaptation research.

By embedding climate action into its core mandate of research, education, and innovation, BIUST stands as a pivotal driver of Botswana’s transition toward a green, resilient, and inclusive economy. Its initiatives directly advance the objectives of SDG 13, NDP 12, and Vision 2036, positioning the University as a leader in shaping a sustainable future for Botswana and beyond
