Responsible Consumption and Production
About SDG 12
Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) seeks to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns — a cornerstone of building an environmentally responsible and resource-efficient economy. It calls for reducing waste generation, managing natural resources wisely, and fostering innovation that supports sustainability in all sectors of development.
At the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), the pursuit of SDG 12 is central to our mission of driving sustainable transformation through science, technology, and innovation. Guided by the BIUST Transformative Strategy (2023–2028), the University is committed to embedding sustainability across its teaching, research, and operations. This includes promoting green technologies, renewable energy use, waste reduction initiatives, and resource-efficient systems within the campus and surrounding communities.
Alignment with National and Strategic Priorities
SDG 12 directly aligns with Botswana’s Vision 2036 and the 12th National Development Plan (NDP 12), both of which emphasize the transition toward a green, inclusive, and diversified economy.
- NDP 12 advances sustainable consumption and production through its focus on a green economy, responsible resource management, and economic diversification beyond diamonds — encouraging sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and green tourism.
- Vision 2036 underscores the need for environmental stewardship, sustainable infrastructure, and responsible use of natural resources as key enablers of long-term prosperity.
- The BIUST Transformative Strategy (2023–2028) complements these priorities by integrating sustainability principles into research, operations, and community engagement, fostering innovation that supports Botswana’s environmental and economic resilience.
