BIUST Valedictorian Inspires Class of 2025 with Message of Resilience

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) celebrated its 10th graduation ceremony with a moving address from valedictorian Hlengiwe Dlamini, a Computer Science and Software Engineering graduate from Eswatini.

In her speech, Dlamini congratulated her peers for reaching the milestone, emphasizing that the day was not only about receiving degrees but also about honoring the hard work, sacrifices, and resilience that brought them to this moment.

“Today is a testimony that hard work pays off. This degree is more than a piece of paper—it is proof that we endured, adapted, and refused to let setbacks define us,” she said to applause.

Reflecting on her journey, Dlamini shared how her determination was tested when she initially faced delays in starting her studies and later encountered health challenges during her academic journey. She noted that perseverance, adaptability, and faith enabled her to push through these obstacles, turning setbacks into stepping stones

She extended gratitude to her family, particularly her mother, for unwavering support, and to BIUST lecturers, supervisors, and peers who shaped her academic experience. Dlamini highlighted the mentorship of Professor Kuthadi and Dr. Tabona, who fueled her passion for data and machine learning, and acknowledged her close-knit community of friends for their encouragement.

Addressing the graduates, she reminded them that their paths would be unique, shaped by the choices they make and opportunities they embrace.

“Our dedication and perseverance that brought us this far must now propel us forward. Every lesson, every tear, every moment of joy has prepared us for the chapter we are about to embark on,” she said.

Dlamini praised the Class of 2025 for their achievements beyond academics, including community projects, national and international competitions, research publications, and entrepreneurial ventures.

“Being part of this class means being surrounded by people who inspire, challenge, and uplift each other,” she noted, adding that their shared resilience and ambition proved that BIUST students are ready to make a global impact.

The valedictorian’s heartfelt address ended on a hopeful note, urging her fellow graduates to embrace change, adapt, and carry forward the spirit of excellence.
