Governance Alignment with the SDGs

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) is committed to promoting inclusive, accountable, and participatory governance in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). The University ensures that all key stakeholders, students, academic staff, non-academic staff, and the broader community, have a voice in institutional decision-making.

Student Representation

Students at BIUST elect their representatives through annual Student Representative Council (SRC) elections. SRC members have a presence in the University’s highest governance structures, including the University Council, Senate, and various Institutional committees. They also participate in Faculty Boards, student welfare committees, and academic oversight forums, ensuring that student perspectives influence policies, learning, and campus life.

Staff Representation

Academic and non-academic staff elect representatives to the University Council, fostering inclusive decision-making and ensuring that staff voices contribute to strategic planning and operational oversight.

Alumni and External Stakeholder Engagement

BIUST engages its alumni and external stakeholders in governance matters. Selected alumni representatives, government

agencies, and industry partners are invited to participate in advisory committees and forums, enhancing transparency, accountability, and alignment with national and regional development priorities.

Academic Governance Structures

Students and staff participate in academic governance through structures such as the Academic Affairs Committee and Learning & Teaching Committees, which oversee curriculum development, quality assurance, and academic planning. These forums ensure collaborative input in shaping the University’s academic and research agenda.

Alignment with SDG 16 and BIUST Transformative Strategy (2023–2028)

BIUST’s governance structures directly support SDG 16 by promoting inclusive, participatory, and accountable decision-making. These practices reinforce the University’s Transformative Strategy by:

  • Strengthening institutional integrity and accountability.
  • Encouraging stakeholder participation in academic, research, and operational decision-making.
  • Enhancing community engagement and partnerships for sustainable development.
  • Fostering a culture of transparency, ethics, and good governance aligned with national Vision 2036 and Africa Agenda 2063 aspirations.

Through these governance mechanisms, BIUST demonstrates its commitment to building strong institutions that underpin academic excellence, social responsibility, and national development.
