SDG 14

Life Below Water

Sustaining Freshwater Ecosystems for Environmental Resilience

Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) aims to conserve and sustainably use aquatic ecosystems. While globally focused on oceans and marine resources, this goal is equally relevant to inland water systems such as rivers, wetlands, dams, and aquifers — which are vital to Botswana’s biodiversity, agriculture, and livelihoods. The sustainable management of these freshwater resources is critical for national resilience, ecosystem health, and socio-economic stability.

Although Botswana is a landlocked nation, the principles of SDG 14 align closely with national priorities under Vision 2036 and the 12th National Development Plan (NDP 12), both of which emphasize sustainable natural resource management, climate adaptation, and environmental protection. These frameworks call for responsible stewardship of water systems to support agriculture, energy, and community well-being — key to maintaining a green and sustainable economy.

Alignment with the BIUST Transformative Strategy (2023–2028)

The BIUST Transformative Strategy (2023–2028) underscores the University’s commitment to advancing sustainable science and innovation that drive Botswana’s transition toward a knowledge-based, environmentally conscious society. In alignment with SDG 14, the Strategy emphasizes:

  • Research Excellence: Advancing water resource management, hydrology, and environmental conservation through evidence-based research and innovation.
  • Technology and Innovation: Developing and applying geospatial tools, environmental sensors, and data modeling technologies to monitor and improve water quality and resource use.
  • Capacity Building: Equipping students and local communities with practical skills in sustainable water management, climate adaptation, and ecosystem restoration.
  • Partnerships and Policy Support: Collaborating with government ministries, NGOs, and international partners to provide science-driven solutions for water sustainability and environmental policy development.

Through these strategic initiatives, BIUST reinforces its role as a national hub for scientific innovation, environmental stewardship, and knowledge transfer, supporting Botswana’s long-term sustainability goals
