Rugby Rumble in Palapye: BIUST Charges Into the 7s Arena!

If you thought BIUST was all books and brains — think again! On a sun-drenched Saturday that crackled with adrenaline, the university’s campus transformed into a buzzing battleground of grit, speed, and raw power as BIUST proudly hosted its first-ever 7s Rugby Tournament – Palapye Edition. And trust us, it did not disappoint.

With 8 men’s teams and 4 fierce women’s teams storming in from across Botswana, including rugby giants like BAC Rugby Club, BDF Cheetahs, and BUAN, the tournament kicked off with high-energy tackles, sharp passes, and bone-rattling scrums. From the very first whistle, it was clear: everyone came to win.

The BIUST Buffaloes, our very own homegrown heroes, galloped into the finals, showing heart, hustle, and serious muscle. But victory slipped through their hooves as they were bested by the Hogs with a final score of 21–7. A tough loss, but landing second place in such a high-caliber tournament? That’s a win in our books!

The Lady Buffaloes, meanwhile, brought the heat with a dynamic blend of seasoned vets and promising rookies. Many expected nerves and fumbles — and sure, there were a few — but what the new squad lacked in experience, they made up for in fearless play and team spirit. They took down BDF (12–10) and edged past the Hogs (20–15) before falling short in a tight final rematch with BDF, going down 20–15. A narrow loss, but a bold message: the future of women’s rugby at BIUST is blazing bright.

As with any first-time event, there were a few hiccups — a late start and the searing Palapye heat didn’t go unnoticed. But players and spectators alike praised the organizing team’s efforts, from shade-giving gazebos to the spirited atmosphere that kept the day electric.

“We’re grateful for the support, the vibe, and the chance to test our mettle,” said one guest player. Another noted, “BIUST just needs to tighten up on timekeeping, but otherwise, it’s been a great showing.”

With lessons learned and ambitions lit, BIUST has thrown down the gauntlet as a serious player on Botswana’s rugby scene. Here’s to more tries, more tackles, and more unforgettable rugby showdowns in Palapye!

Until next time – Buffaloes, charge on!
