A historic moment for BIUST and Japan

A historic moment for BIUST and Japan

The Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST) hosted the official launch of the Akita University office on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. This momentous occasion marks a significant step in fostering educational and cultural exchanges between Japan and Botswana.

During the event, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Teaching & Learning, Professor Elisha Shemang, emphasised the importance of this partnership, which was established in 2019 and has been flourishing ever since. “With Akita University generously absorbing BIUST students to further their education at no cost, we are witnessing a powerful investment in human capital that will uplift both nations, he said.”

For his part, Dr. Gotoh, the Executive Director of Akita University, expressed pride in representing Japan in this crucial initiative aimed at attracting African students. He highlighted the project’s potential to significantly enhance the development of both Africa and Japan through technology transfer and collaboration. He profusely appreciated the support that has enabled the establishment of this project office in Botswana, which serves as a cornerstone for success.

Professor Miyamoto, the Head of the Botswana Office, shared that this initiative is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology of Japan (MEXT). The office will act as a vital resource centre, providing guidance on scholarships, admissions, and cultural preparations for studying in Japan.
Key Initiatives of the Botswana Office include:
• Study in Japan Fairs and Workshops: Raising awareness of opportunities available in Japan.
• Japanese Language Classes: Enhancing cultural understanding.
• Pre-departure Support: Offering guidance on visa applications and exams while building networks among current and former students for ongoing mentorship.

Additionally, she said the “Study in Japan” Global Network Project aims to create transformative educational opportunities for African students, with a focus on increasing the number of students pursuing studies in Japan. The headquarters of this project will be located at both BIUST and Nairobi, Kenya, opening doors to endless possibilities!
