The Botswana International University of Science and Technology has reached a historic milestone with the launch of its Poultry Litter Pyrolysis Plant in Palapye, an initiative that signals a bold step forward in Botswana’s commitment to research-driven innovation, sustainability, and economic transformation.
The event was graced by the Assistant Minister of Communications and Innovation, Honourable Shawn Nthaile, whose presence underscored the government’s strong support for technological advancement and innovation. His participation sent a clear message: Botswana is serious about fostering research ecosystems that translate ideas into impactful solutions.
In his address, the Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Elisha Shemang emphasized that modern universities must go beyond generating knowledge, they must apply it in ways that tangibly improve society and the environment. The pyrolysis plant stands as a powerful embodiment of this mission.
More than just a new facility, the plant represents years of rigorous research, experimentation, and collaboration. At its core is an innovative system that transforms poultry litter, traditionally considered agricultural waste, into high-value products such as biochar, bio-oil, and renewable syngas. This breakthrough demonstrates how scientific ingenuity can convert environmental challenges into economic opportunities.
Central to this achievement is the work of Dr. Daniel E. Botha, Co- founder of Nucarbon Technology Company who led the fabrication of the plant during his PhD studies at BIUST. His hands-on leadership and technical expertise were instrumental in turning a research concept into a fully operational system. His work reflects the calibre of talent being developed within the university and the importance of providing students with opportunities to bridge theory and practice.
This achievement was made possible through the financial support of the Botswana Innovation Fund, whose mandate is to stimulate innovation and support the commercialization of research in Botswana. Their investment reflects confidence in both the technology and the capabilities of local researchers.
The launch also aligns with broader national efforts, including the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme, which aims to accelerate innovation-led growth. Initiatives like the Nucarbon solution, incubated at the Botswana Digital & Innovation Hub, are helping position Botswana as a leader in homegrown, sustainable technologies.
