The Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST) recently welcomed Radisele Junior Secondary School (JSS) for a courtesy visit, in partnership with Giessen University from Germany. The visit aimed to provide an immersive experience of BIUST’s academic environment while exploring potential future collaborations that could benefit both institutions and their students.
During the visit, students and teachers from Radisele JSS had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the university’s various schools and academic programs. This exposure was designed to help them make informed decisions about encouraging students to pursue higher education at BIUST.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Michael Moleleke, the Director of International Linkages and Partnerships at BIUST, provided an overview of the university’s six schools. Each school was represented by faculty members who shared insights into their respective programs and academic offerings.
Mr. Kabelo N. Moswetsi, the Community Liaison Executive in the Outreach and Engagements Directorate, highlighted the university’s commitment to community engagement. He explained that his department acts as a bridge between BIUST and the community, helping to resolve local challenges by connecting stakeholders with experts who can develop viable solutions. He also emphasized the importance of engaging students from senior secondary schools with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), linking them with mentors to support their academic and career aspirations.
The visiting teachers from Radisele JSS expressed keen interest in seeing their students continue their education at BIUST. They particularly appreciated the university’s inclusive approach, which accommodates students from diverse backgrounds, including Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and students with disabilities, as well as those with talents in sports. The Physical Education teacher noted the university’s efforts in nurturing students’ athletic abilities, acknowledging that academic excellence is not the only pathway to success.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of BIUST’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Pyrolysis Laboratory, the School of Biology and Biotechnological Sciences, and the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering. This hands-on experience provided Radisele JSS students and teachers with a deeper understanding of the university’s academic environment and the opportunities it offers.
This initiative underscores BIUST’s dedication to fostering partnerships and inspiring the next generation of STEM leaders in Botswana and beyond.
