The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), through its Department of Chemical and Forensic Sciences, hosted an exhilarating Chemistry Festival in Lecheng, themed “The Chemistry of Candy.” The event brought the transformative power of science to young minds from Lecheng, Goo-Tau, Malaka, and Matlhakola Primary Schools, sparking curiosity and a newfound passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The festival featured engaging, hands-on experiments that connected science with the children’s everyday experiences. The students were introduced to the fascinating world of materials science and chemical reactions by exploring the chemistry behind their favorite treats- like candy and colors. The activities were carefully designed to show how chemistry plays a vital role in everyday life, fostering creativity, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for STEM fields.
The Deputy Kgosi of Lecheng, who delivered the welcome remarks, expressed heartfelt gratitude to BIUST for bringing such an impactful initiative to his community. He commended the university’s efforts in empowering young learners and highlighted the potential long-term benefits for the region.
This groundbreaking festival was made possible through the generous funding of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific organization dedicated to advancing chemistry to improve lives and protect the planet. The grant was secured by Ms. Keneilwe Motlakatlala, an MSc Chemistry student at BIUST, whose commitment to promoting science education was pivotal to the festival’s success.
The event was further supported by Presperidad Pty (Ltd) and the BIUST Department of Chemical and Forensic Sciences, whose shared mission is to make science accessible, enjoyable, and impactful for children, particularly in grassroots communities.
The Chemistry of Candy Festival represents a significant step in BIUST’s ongoing outreach and engagement efforts, which align with the university’s mission to transform lives through education and community partnerships. By igniting a love for STEM in young learners, BIUST is nurturing the next generation of scientists, innovators, and leaders who will drive Botswana’s development as a knowledge-based economy.
As BIUST continues to bring STEM awareness to underserved communities, events like this underscore the importance of collaboration between academic institutions, industry stakeholders, and global partners. The Chemistry of Candy Festival is more than just a celebration of science; it is a powerful reminder of how education can inspire and empower the leaders of tomorrow
