BIUST makes strides in advancing space science in Africa

The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) is making significant strides in advancing space science in Africa, thanks to substantial support from the European Commission. Two major initiatives, the Pan-African Planetary and Space Science Network (PAPSSN) and Fast-4-Future, are being coordinated by BIUST, highlighting the institution’s commitment to developing planetary and space sciences on the continent.

In conjunction with the launch of World Space Science Week on the 4th October 2024, the University welcomed and hosted a public lecture by esteemed astronaut Prof. Christer Fuglesang from the European Space Agency to bolster these initiatives. This collaboration aligns with Botswana’s national strategy for space science initiated in 2017, aiming to integrate space science and technology into national development plans.

BIUST has been entrusted by the Botswana government to lead this innovative agenda, focusing on cutting-edge research and technology that supports the 4th Industrial Revolution. The Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Elisha Shemang emphasises that investing in space science not only aligns with the government’s digital transformation goals but also positions Botswana within the global space economy.

Notable projects include participation in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which aims to build the world’s largest radio telescope, involving seven African nations. Additionally, Botswana is engaged in the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (AVN) project, which is crucial for enhancing local expertise in astronomy and engineering.

Furthermore, BIUST is developing a National Optical Observatory, referred to as “Astro-Park,” which will feature a planetarium and research-grade optical telescope. This facility aims to inspire future scientists while contributing to astronomical research in Botswana.

A key milestone is the BOTSAT1 project, Botswana’s first satellite, set to launch in February 2025. This ambitious endeavour will provide vital data for local industries such as agriculture and mining, enhancing decision-making capabilities through advanced satellite technology.

BIUST is at the forefront of Botswana’s journey into space science, fostering both local capacity and international collaboration to ensure that the country plays an active role in global space initiatives.
