The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life has the overall mandate of creating a vibrant campus life for students in order for them to have a meaningful student experience. The Division operates with three directorates below:
Directorate of Campus Life
The mandate of this directorate is to provide comprehensive Primary health care services; that is preventative care, curative care, health promotion and education services to all BIUST student community.
Directorate of Student Services
For preventative purposes health services in conjunction with health and well-being office, and Counselling provides information, to reduce:
- Infectious and communicable diseases;
- Unintended pregnancies;
- Tobacco use;
- Alcohol use, especially among minors;
- Other substance abuse;
- Avoidable injuries;
- Sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection; and
- To promote fitness, nutrition and weight control, immunization and routine health maintenance evaluations.
Clinical Consultations
With either nurse or medical practitioners in a confidential, holistic Primary health care setting. All staff members are qualified, accredited practitioners with a valid license to practice.
Dispensary
Essential medications are dispensed by a nurse for free to students presenting with a valid student identity card. Specialized medication will require a prescription from a Medical Practitioner [expand title = “read more”]and the student will have to get these at Palapye Primary Hospital or purchase them at local pharmacies.[/expand]
Sexual & Reproductive Health
This is Family Planning: different contraceptive methods, provision of emergency contraception (EC), Ante Natal Care (ANC) and Post Natal Care (PNC) for mothers only.[expand title = “read more”] Management of Sexually transmitted diseases (STI), Pap smear/cervical cancer screening, and Breast examination.[/expand]
Psychological Support
Anxiety, depression, relationship and sexuality issues [expand title = “read more”] when necessary can be referred to our Counselling Services.[/expand]
Managed Medical Conditions
Asthma, diabetes, hypertension, tuberculosis, epilepsy, depression etc.
Referrals
To physiotherapists, dentists, X-rays, ultrasound scan, [expand title = “read more”]tertiary hospitals, private hospitals and specialists. International students would be expected to pay when referred to government facilities, those who are Botswana government sponsored will need to produce the service access card. Students with Medical Aid cover may be given an option to be referred to a private practitioner.[/expand]
The clinic is available on BIUST campus, near the cafeteria and sports hall. All health services are available for free for all registered BIUST students, presenting with a valid student ID card.
