Call for Research Proposals for funding of BIUST Priority Projects (BPP)
Full call details and application template can be accessed on the below link: The recognition of the University as an ‘engine of development’ and as a ‘Flagship science, engineering and technology university of international repute will ultimately depend on its success in undertaking high-quality research that can be transformed into tangible applications and products of importance to society. This requires the University to ensure research is institutionalized as a strategic priority, with strong industry linkages, and supported by sustainable research staffing and infrastructure; research
funding, and a properly managed and coordinated research management capacity. It is BIUST’s strategic priority to a dedicated part of research funding to two transdisciplinary flagship projects, which will be referred to as BIUST Priority Projects. These projects will be expected to be innovative enough to generate products that can be commercialized. This action is anchored on the second Strategic Theme of the BIUST Strategy: Research and Innovation Excellence.

2.1 Employment status and designation
The PI must be a full-time BIUST employee with a contract valid for at least one year from the time of application. If the contract is to expire in less than one year, there must be a motivation from the HOD and Dean with evidence of succession plan.
2.2 Academic rank and team composition
Applicant should be an expert in the project field and be from the level of Associate Professor upwards. This is a university-level project, therefore, the research consortium must involve at least two active research groups from at least two faculties. An active research group, for the sake of this application, will include: (a) research groups that are registered by the ORDI and have submitted research reports in the last 12 months from the time of summiting this application and (2) research groups that are not registered but have attracted external funding of at least P 500,000.
3. BUDGET AND TIME LINES
The budget for this proposal shall be a maximum of 1 million pula per year for three years (P3 million for 3 years)
4. SELECTION PROCESS AND AWARD CRITERIA
The selection of the projects will be a competitive process based on the assessment of the relevance, sustainability, capacity development and quality of the proposals (scientific merit and innovation).
5. APPLICATION PROCESS

- Applications will be shortlisted by the Scientific Research Committee for approval by Senate Research Committee.
- The short-listed proposals will be reviewed by external experts selected by the Senate Research Committee.

Innovation Challenge Fund
BIUST has set up an innovation Challenge Fund under the Directorate of Technology Transfer to assist students to develop their ideas into products and services for economic development. The challenges should be addressed by innovative solutions through multi-disciplinary collaborative projects.
The call for the Innovation Challenge Fund 2020/2021 applications is now open. All interested students (undergraduate and postgraduates) are invited to submit their proposals for this challenge to the Technology Transfer office by 18th December 2020.
The purpose of the fund is to support students with basic running expenses and not for purchasing of expensive equipment. The fund will help:
- To develop their ideas into products, services and facilities that can address the needs of industry and society
- Facilitate mobility of students or research collaboration or information dissemination
- Create and develop a strong research culture at BIUST
2.FOCUS AREAS OF THE CALL
The call places emphasis on facilitation of local Intellectual Property development and is open to any topic as aligned to the BIUST Research Focus Areas as per Research and Innovation Strategy.
a. This call is for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
b. Applicants are encouraged to apply as multi-disciplinary teams preferably the BIUST research group
c. A multi-disciplinary team must not mix under-graduate and postgraduate students.
d. Approval by Supervisor/Mentor
4.BUDGET AND TIME LINES
a. Postgraduate students: P300,000.00 per project per proposal. (Only 3 successful applications will be funded)
b. Undergraduate Students: P200,000.00 per project proposal. (Only 3 successful applications will be funded).
c. All Projects must be for a maximum period of 1 year
