Thematic Areas & Platforms

Botswana International University of Science & Technology has identified four thematic areas which prioritize the collective delivery of the University Strategy. The four thematic areas are geared towards increasing research and innovation quality, productivity, development and funding. Below are our thematic areas:

Climate and Society

Rational: Conservation and sustainable exploitation of natural resources; and early warning disaster prevention and risk management as well as mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

Research Platforms

  • Climate and impact modeling
  • Land degradation and desertification
  • Air quality forecasting and mitigation
  • Early warning and disaster management for extreme weather and climate

Natural Resources Management

Rational: The need for a green economy, self-reliance in energy production; and high value added products; and an increase in quality of life and life expectancy.

Research Platforms

  • Clean and sustainable energy
  • Water resources and management
  • Sustainable mining, mineral processing and beneficiation
  • Health, food safety and security
  • Waste utilisation

Innovative Technological Products and Services for Economic Development

Rationale: Development and commercialisation products in the following sectors: health (radio-isotopes, imaging), energy, new materials, spin-off technologies from Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, computer software, cyber security; high performance computers and hardware; and Drives technological innovation and creates new industries in Botswana. Medical robotics and medical diagnostics have global and local demands, especially that these are cutting edge topics for research as well as products that are in demand for the growing market and for E – commerce and business applications.
