Overview

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences is one of the largest of the five departments within the Faculty of Science at Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST).  In 2012, when BIUST admitted its first cohort of undergraduate student, there were only two Departments in the College/Faculty of Science, and the Mathematics and Statistics sections were part of the Department of Applied Sciences. The birth of the Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences came about in the 2014/15 academic year and the Department has since grown to the level where it is now one of the largest Departments, not only in the Faculty of Science but in the entire university. It has diversified academics, coming from different countries: Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Australia, Hungary and India. The Department regularly invites outstanding professors around the globe to deliver some selected modules to both its undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The Department prides itself in producing some of the first cohort of BSc graduates the university graduated. Even more, the first postgraduate student to ever complete a PhD degree at BIUST came from the Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences.

About Mathematics

As a beautiful creation of the human spirit, Mathematics reflects musing reason, the active will, and some desire for aesthetic perfection. Its basic elements are logic, intuition, analysis, creativity, individuality and generality. Its amazing nature and power of finding applications in real life phenomena makes it the queen of sciences. Mathematics is therefore a central force of modern developments in sciences, engineering, technology, economics and commerce.

About Statistics

Statistics is a prestigious and well compensated area that develops a wide range of quantitative and analytical skills and broad based scientific knowledge required to solve real-world problems through the application of sound mathematical principles and tools for making crucial and important decisions. Statistics is a science that leads to a comprehensive use of acquired quantitative skills for the development of critical thinking and important decision making knowledge for dealing with the present and predicting the future.

About the Department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences, within the Faculty of Science at Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), offers programs in Mathematics and Statistics. The Department encompasses the disciplines of Mathematics and Statistics and caters to the needs of students ranging from undergraduate level to doctoral level. Apart from the Mathematics and Statistics majors, we teach undergraduate modules to almost all undergraduate students in all the two Faculties at BIUST, namely the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

In pursuance of the vision of BIUST, the Department commits itself to the achievement of academic excellence in the fields of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, by

  • Providing high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Presenting contents relevant to the needs of Botswana, the African continent and its people.

Academics within the Department are active in research areas like Mathematical Statistics, Functional Analysis, Algebra, Financial Mathematics, Topology, Operations Research, Fluid Mechanics, Biomathematics and Numerical Analysis. Through ongoing research collaborations with colleagues, we maintain links with other institutions in Botswana and around the world.

Our Programs: The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences offers high quality undergraduate (Bachelor of Science) programs in Pure and Applied Mathematics and in Statistics. We also offer a complement of postgraduate qualifications, Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in both Mathematics and Statistics. The programs were prepared in line with the requirements of Botswana Qualifications Authority, and are recognized throughout the world.

Bachelor’s Degree: Our bachelor’s degree is designed in such a way that there are four years of study with two semesters in each year. The minimum load for each semester is assumed to be 15 credits. The programs are designed to give basic and fundamental knowledge in mathematical sciences so that graduates from these programs meet the exit level outcomes. These unique programs afford learners an opportunity to be introduced to the flavor of the area of their inclination in the branches of Mathematics such as Financial Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, Industrial Mathematics, Operations Research, Analysis and Algebra. Quantitative and Entrepreneurial skills required by the modern society are also imparted to the learner.

Masters Degree: Students enrolled in an MSc program can graduate with an MSc (Master of Science) in Mathematics/Statistics. The MSc program is done over a two year period on a full time basis.   In the first year, students are expected to complete at least 30 credits of courses work and in the second year students are expected to carryout high level research that will lead to an MSc dissertation.

Doctoral Degree: This degree is by research only, where students are required to make a unique contribution to the field of study. The program is normally done over a three year period on full time basis.

Funding Opportunities: There are limited opportunities for postgraduate students within the Department where students can get financial support to cover tuition and/or living expenses. Partial or Full support may be awarded every academic year for deserving students. Funding is awarded on merit.
