Overview

The Earth is our only home and is facing enormous challenges from growing human population and industrial expansion across the globe.  At BIUST, the Earth & Environmental Sciences Department is a quintessential interdisciplinary scientific community with teaching and research goals of understanding Earth’s dynamic history and processes that integrate the four terrestrial spheres: lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere for responsible stewardship of the Earth and her natural resources. We offer our students a hands-on learning experience in addition to innovative degrees.

We have undergraduate (BSc) programmes with majors in Geology, Environmental Science, as well as both Earth Science and Environmental Science.

At postgraduate level, the Department offers Masters (MSc) and Doctoral (PhD) degree programmes with opportunities to specialise in aqueous and environmental geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, applied geophysics, structural geology and tectonics, sedimentology and stratigraphy, mineralogy, economic geology, hydrogeology, soils and biogeochemistry, Quaternary environments and palaeoclimatology, atmospheric and climate sciences, waste management, remote sensing and GIS science, environmental impact assessment, surface hydrology and water management. The goal of our postgraduate programme is to equip students with the critical and analytical skills and technical expertise to conduct independent and problem-based creative research. While many of our students will find successful careers in the Earth and Environmental sciences, our mission is to develop broad-minded individuals with a sense of purpose, who can be leaders in any career of their choice.
