Overview
The Department of Chemical, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (CMME) at the undergraduate level, offers separate but related degree programmes in Chemical Engineering and Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. The designation of degrees are as follows:
- BEng Chemical Engineering
- BEng Materials and Metallurgical Engineering
Chemical engineers deal principally with production of chemicals from various raw materials and compounds and also play an important role in the extraction and processing of minerals. They design, build, operate and manage the plants for physical, thermal or chemical processing of materials to obtain consumable goods and products such as food and beverages, plastics, soaps and detergents, fertilizers, cement, pharmaceuticals and refined petroleum products.
Materials and metallurgical engineers study the properties and characteristics of metals and other non-metallic materials vis-à-vis ceramics, polymers, composites, carbides and cermet and the likes. They plan, design and develop machinery and processes to concentrate, extract, refine and process these materials. These engineers can be employed in consulting engineering firms, mining, metal processing and manufacturing companies as well as in government, research and educational institutions.
Our Vision
The vision of the department is to be a centre of excellence in chemical, materials & metallurgical engineering and allied industries using cutting edge measurement techniques and instrumentation devices.
Our Mission
The mission of the programme is to develop chemical engineers, materials engineers and metallurgical engineers who will employ naturally occurring or synthetic materials to produce artefacts with limited or zero environmental impacts.
Postgraduate and Research Activities
