When the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) made its first appearance at the BHRDS Fair in 2011 they had not yet enrolled any students but they had a vision and a plan to become a reputable institution in the country. Eight years later they have made significant strides in the industry and they are producing some of the country’s engineers and scientists of note as they contribute to the nation’s economy.

As well, they undertake six months internship programme and participate in research programmes.
We believe that we have specialized programmes which are not offered in any of the public or private institutions in Botswana, they are meant to meet the industry needs. Our aim as a university is to ensure that we produce industry ready graduates. We have also been fortunate enough to be aligned to industry players such as the mining, telecommunications, information communications technology and other sectors where we know that the programmes we offer will meet their needs. As such we are ensuring that they have ample supply of skilled force and entrepreneurs. Because of its research emphasis, BIUST works closely with the private sector to meet emerging skills needs of the industry, as well as identifying challenges that can be solved through applied research. The University’s curriculum takes into account the needs of the private sector and is driven by the mission of BIUST to contribute to the development of the economy towards a knowledge-based economy through research.
“Our students are at the centre of the University enterprise, the student’s enrolment plan was develop which details the faculty and programme level on annual basis. The University is committed to providing students with an exceptional learning experience by providing programmes that are consistent in terms of purpose, structure, modes of delivery, which make optimal use of educational technology and address a diverse range of learning styles. In addition to the specialised programmes in Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), the students take business and entrepreneurship courses to equip them with business and management skills. The University has adopted Problem Based Learning (BPL), this method is a teaching instrument used to solve complex real-world problems that are used to promote student learning of concepts and principles, PBL promotes the development of critical thinking abilities and communication skills. The University aims to provide a positive and life-changing learning experience with opportunities for students to reach to their potential. The University has implemented the “Students Norms and Standards”, which are aimed at improving institutional efficiency and effectiveness.
